Internal Continuous Assessment — South African TVET Colleges
ICASS is a year-long evaluation process that makes up a significant part of your final mark. It tracks your progress through various tasks throughout the year, rather than relying solely on one final exam. The process ensures you are ready for external national examinations.
ICASS usually accounts for 50% of your total final promotion mark for vocational subjects, while the external exam provides the other 50%.
Throughout the year you must complete specific tasks for each subject:
You must keep all your marked tasks in a physical or digital folder called a PoE. This proves you completed the work and is moderated by the college and the DHET.
Each task is worth a percentage of your internal mark:
To qualify for your final exams, you must achieve these minimum ICASS marks:
| Subject Type | Minimum ICASS Pass Mark |
|---|---|
| Vocational Subjects | 50% |
| Languages & Life Skills | 40% |
| Mathematics / Maths Literacy | 30% |
Exam Admission: Failing to submit tasks or not meeting the sub-minimum will block you from writing the final national exam for that subject.
Final Grade: ICASS counts for 50% of your total final promotion mark — the external exam provides the other 50%.
If you miss an assessment due to illness or an emergency, provide a valid medical certificate or proof to your lecturer immediately to request a reassessment.
Use our subject-specific calculators to estimate your ICASS and see if you're on track to qualify.
